Improving call quality: Linphone adopts the AV1 codec

In a continuous effort to enhance audio and video communication quality, Linphone now integrates the AV1 codec for simple calls.

AV1 is a next-generation video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). It is widely adopted by streaming leaders like Netflix and YouTube, notably for its compression performance and its ability to deliver sharp images even under limited network conditions.

Until now, Linphone already supported efficient video codecs such as VP8, H.264, and H.265, providing an excellent balance between visual quality and resource consumption. AV1 marks a new milestone by offering superior image quality at low bitrates.

This update is already effective starting with version 5.4 of our SDKs, requiring no manual configuration as it is set as the default for simple calls.

Support for AV1 in conferences is planned by the end of 2025.
